For a moment it seemed like we wouldn’t get here…
The morning air smells different now!
Yes, the air that felt like ice along our skin, has become a refreshing breeze.
After months of snowfall and an overcast sky, it feels wonderful to see sun rays shine through our windows again.
Can you believe it?
Spring is finally here!
The season when what looked dead in the winter, comes back to life; even more beautiful than before!
The Bible is full of stories that have the same concept.
This will be useful if you need some spring Bible stories to teach your kids,
However, I hope that these spring Bible stories help you to see God’s heart towards the season that you are in right now!
Furthermore, I hope that this helps you see springtime in a whole new way!
That when you look outside at the blooming trees and clear skies, that you are instantly reminded of God’s word and all the principles that God knit into these stories.
Here are the
BEST Spring Bible stories!
I like to call our first story…
Sleeping, not dead.
This story is in Luke 8:40-55 NKJV…
“So it was, when Jesus returned, that the multitude welcomed Him, for they were all waiting for Him. And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at Jesus’ feet and begged Him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter about twelve years of age, and she was dying. But as He went, the multitudes thronged Him. Now a woman, having a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any, came from behind and touched the border of His garment. And immediately her flow of blood stopped. And Jesus said, “Who touched Me?” When all denied it, Peter and those with him said, “Master, the multitudes throng and press You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ” But Jesus said, “Somebody touched Me, for I perceived power going out from Me.” Now when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before Him, she declared to Him in the presence of all the people the reason she had touched Him and how she was healed immediately. And He said to her, “Daughter, be of good cheer; your faith has made you well. Go in peace.” While He was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, “Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Teacher.” But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, “Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.” When He came into the house, He permitted no one to go in except Peter, James, and John, and the father and mother of the girl. Now all wept and mourned for her; but He said, “Do not weep; she is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him, knowing that she was dead. But He put them all outside, took her by the hand and called, saying, “Little girl, arise.” Then her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And He commanded that she be given something to eat.”
We meet a little girl who fell into a winter season.
Everyone used what they saw to confirm her condition, but Jesus knew that
our understanding is very limited!
Human eyes are deceiving.
What we know and understand oftentimes proves to be unreliable.
Jesus did not let the appearance of death, make Him trust His eyes more than He trusted God.
He applied this scripture!
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;”.
Proverbs 3:5 NKJV.
Winter looks like death, but
Jesus knew that in winter, nothing is as hopeless as it seems.
In winter, creation doesn’t die…
Creation sleeps!
Everyone ridiculed Jesus when He told them that she was only sleeping!
They felt so sure that what they perceived was right.
Their confidence in their own understanding was far above their trust in God!
Which is why Jesus had them leave the situation.
Because their trust in their own knowledge was greater than their faith in God.
Jesus created an atmosphere of faith and in that moment, He called spring to arrive!
He called her to rise from her sleep and bloom like a flower!
Winter doesn’t mean the end…
Winter is preparation for spring!
Now for our next story.
The Rattling of Springtime.
This story is found in Ezekiel 37:1-14 NKJV.
“The hand of the Lord came upon me and brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley; and it was full of bones. Then He caused me to pass by them all around, and behold, there were very many in the open valley; and indeed they were very dry. And He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” So I answered, “O Lord God, You know.” Again He said to me, “Prophesy to these bones, and say to them, ‘O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! Thus says the Lord God to these bones: “Surely I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live. I will put sinews on you and bring flesh upon you, cover you with skin and put breath in you; and you shall live. Then you shall know that I am the Lord.” ’ ” So I prophesied as I was commanded; and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and suddenly a rattling; and the bones came together, bone to bone. Indeed, as I looked, the sinews and the flesh came upon them, and the skin covered them over; but there was no breath in them. Also He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” ’ ” So I prophesied as He commanded me, and breath came into them, and they lived, and stood upon their feet, an exceedingly great army. Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They indeed say, ‘Our bones are dry, our hope is lost, and we ourselves are cut off!’ Therefore prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, O My people, I will open your graves and cause you to come up from your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel. Then you shall know that I am the Lord, when I have opened your graves, O My people, and brought you up from your graves. I will put My Spirit in you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken it and performed it,” says the Lord.’ ””.
Again, we watch as a winter season steals hope from a person’s heart.
This valley was full of dry bones, but it might as well have been covered in snow.
As the plants turn brown and shrivel into dry, lifeless-looking twigs…
So became the human remains left in this valley.
The remains were nothing but bones that had completely dried out, which indicates that life has not been in this valley in a long time.
In the wintertime, all of the valleys that had once flourished with life, now appear to be dry and dead.
Snow is the beautiful blanket that oftentimes covers the sad remains of every plant and tree that once looked beautiful and full of life.
When snow is not present…
All we see is fields full of lifeless vegetation under a darkened sky.
Plants look in the winter as they typically do when they die, so this season does appear to be a season of death.
In this season, most of the plants and trees that we see, don’t produce fruit.
This is another reason that winter is associated with death;
Because the lack of produce not only could be an indication of the plants death, but no produce impacts the lives of those who depend on it’s fruit to bring life to their bodies.
Ezekiel didn’t simply see a field of dry bones…
He saw a valley of winter!
Spring, nowhere in sight.
God asked Ezekiel something that we should ask ourselves, as we stand in the middle of our winter seasons.
“Can these bones live?”
Can something that looks so dead actually live again?
Ezekiel responded “ LORD, You know.”
However, he wasn’t able to say yes or no.
I believe this is because
he couldn’t see how life could be restored while staring at the hopeless sight of dry bones; still, he also knew that his human understanding is limited.
He knew that he wasn’t qualified to know something about resurrected life, when he can’t even understand how to create life in the first place.
This was a God-sized question, so if there was one thing that he was sure about, it was that he cannot know the answer to a question so beyond comprehension.
He knew that only God knows the answer to this!
We see death and think it’s all over…
God sees nothing as over until He says it’s over!
Our season can’t be lifeless if God hasn’t spoken it.
God doesn’t allow the winter to have it’s way!
He gives seasons to show us that life needs rest
but rest doesn’t indicate death…
even though sleeping oftentimes looks like death.
In this story, God shows that life is under His authority!
We can’t believe what our eyes are telling us.
What looks hopeless to us, is still under God’s command.
Nothing that God called to live, can die…
However,
everything that God calls to live, needs to rest.
Just as this valley of death was restored to life by the word of the LORD, spoken through the mouth of Ezekiel;
So, our season of hopelessness will surely end with a season of spring!
It won’t be when we can predict it, nor when we want it…
But,
When God calls forth springtime,
The winter has to step aside!
All we have to do is listen for the rattle…
Now, for the best Spring Bible story of all; Which I call…
Winter Friday… Spring Sunday!
Our final story occurs in the book of Luke,
“Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two. And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” Having said this, He breathed His last. So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous Man!” And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man. He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before. That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near. And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and they observed the tomb and how His body was laid. Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.”
Luke 23:44-56 NKJV.
The darkness fell on the earth…
Darker than any winter that we have ever known.
This was a bitter cold unlike anything man could imagine.
The Messiah faced the season that we couldn’t bare to face.
Humanity’s only hope was nailed to a cross.
Springtime was not a possibility anymore!
Jesus Christ breathed His last breath…
Or did He?
“Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’ ” And they remembered His words. Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them. But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.”
Luke 24:1-12 NKJV.
Remember, with God…
Things are not what they appear to be in human understanding.
What seems to be dead, may only be sleeping.
There had to be a winter season but that didn’t have to be the last season.
Jesus had to die on that cross…
but He didn’t have to stay there.
God called Jesus to this winter season in order to deliver our sin to the death sentence that it deserved…
but God didn’t let our sin take Jesus to the grave with it.
The power of sin died,
not our Savior!
Jesus carried our sin to it’s eternal end,
but sin couldn’t take Jesus there.
Hope was never lost.
The dry and dead season isn’t an indication of hopelessness.
God allowed the winter to hit on Friday and in three days, He brought forward springtime.
There cannot be a spring without winter!
Hope was just as alive in the winter as it was in spring.
If Jesus didn’t die than He couldn’t rise!
He is the hope of humanity BECAUSE He faced both the winter and spring.
When we perceive that our season is dead and our hope would be futile,
that doesn’t mean that it’s over!
Remember that God holds authority over all seasons!
Read verses 5 and 6!
“Why do you seek the living among the dead?
He is not here, but is risen!…”
They expected to find Jesus where they expected to find the dead,
but Jesus was not dead!
He was in winter…
Sunday was springtime!
“He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’ ” And they remembered His words.”
Luke 24:6-8 NKJV.
Jesus told them that spring would come!
They saw winter and lost hope of ever seeing springtime again.
They saw a valley of dry bones…
They saw a 12 year old girl lying lifeless on a bed…
God saw life where we see death.
The LORD sees life being renewed in a season that looks dry and dead.
God sees rest in a season that looks to us as expiration.
He has the authority over what lives and dies, so it would be foolish for us to think that a season is useless and dead based on how it appears…
Spring is coming!
Even if it doesn’t seem like it!
Winter doesn’t disqualify spring…
Without winter there would be no spring!
Every season has a purpose!
Winter hurts but something great is growing under the surface!
Winter is cold, but spring is coming!
We won’t see what winter was doing until we see it bloom in the spring!
Your winter season is how God develops inside of your heart a spring more beautiful than ever before!
So, no matter how dark, cold and hopeless your season looks,
trust God’s process and the purpose that He made for every season of our lives!
