What is my purpose in life?
That’s the age-old question.
It seems that almost everyone has an opinion on what our purpose is.
While, at the same time, so many people don’t believe we have any purpose at all.
We either spend our lives searching for a purpose or we seek only to enjoy as much as we can, during the time we have here; if we believe that we are a cosmic accident.
So let’s begin with that question.
Do we have a purpose?
Yes.
Where is my proof?
All around!
Purpose is the “why” behind what exists.
Ask any scientist, historian or quite honestly, any person who has learned about anything in this world.
We learn, only because we ask the question…
Why?
As a child, you are constantly asking your parents that question.
Pumping gas into the car and a child asks, “why?”
“Because the car needs gas. If we don’t put gas in the car, the car won’t go.”
“Why?”
“Because cars were made to work like that.”
“Why?”
This will go on and on, until the parent is about ready to explode.
The point is,
Everything has a purpose and our inclination since birth is to discover the purpose of everything.
As we grow older, we learn the purpose of more and more things, that we didn’t understand the purpose of as children.
When we mature, only then, we admit that everything has a purpose!
Every insect and every animal has a purpose.
The sun has a purpose and so does rain.
Fires have a purpose and bacteria does too.
If you are open to understanding, you will find that everything you once thought was pointless, actually serves a unique purpose!
“To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven:
A time to be born,
And a time to die;
A time to plant,
And a time to pluck what is planted;
A time to kill,
And a time to heal;
A time to break down,
And a time to build up;
A time to weep,
And a time to laugh;
A time to mourn,
And a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones,
And a time to gather stones;
A time to embrace,
And a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to gain,
And a time to lose;
A time to keep,
And a time to throw away;
A time to tear,
And a time to sew;
A time to keep silence,
And a time to speak;
A time to love,
And a time to hate;
A time of war,
And a time of peace.
What profit has the worker from that in which he labors?
I have seen the God-given task with which the sons of men are to be occupied. He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.”
Ecclesiastes 3:1-11 NKJV
Now that we understand that all creation has a purpose, even if we don’t see the purpose of everything yet, we simply must see the same is for us!
We have a purpose, just like everything else on earth.
The difference is this:
Nature didn’t pick it’s purpose, God did, so they respond by doing what they were created to do.
We like to believe that we can choose our purpose or declare that we don’t have one…
Here is the second thing we need to realize…
We cannot choose anything about the purpose of something, we did not participate in the process of creating!
The creator of the smartphone can tell us the purpose of the device and he would be 100% correct!
Why?
Because he created everything about the device, therefore, he knows exactly how this device is supposed to be utilized.
Think about it!
Everyone knows that a car needs either gas or an electric charge in order to fully utilize the vehicle for what it was purposed for.
What most people don’t know is why!
Why does a car need fuel?
Why can’t it run without any fuel?
Most of the people who are operating vehicles today, don’t understand the mechanics behind how vehicles function.
They do trust the creator, though!
Since the one who created the purpose of that vehicle told us to keep the tank full of gas, we don’t argue or find some other fuel to fill the car with!
We just do as instructed, to keep the car functioning as it was purposed to.
We fully understand this concept, until it comes to ourselves.
We know that everything has a purpose.
We know that we can’t choose the purpose of something we didn’t make ourselves.
Yet, we forget that, if everything has a purpose, that means we have a purpose too.
Though, we have a purpose, we cannot choose the purpose of ourselves, because we did not create ourselves!
So, since we didn’t create ourselves, and therefore unable to define our own purpose, how to we find what our purpose is?
Well, as we go to the creator of the smartphone to tell us the purpose of the device and we go to the creator of the car to tell us the purpose of the machine…
We need to go to the Creator of us, to find out our purpose!
What if you believe that we don’t have a Creator?
This brings us back to how everything we see has a purpose and since we are born we seek to find a purpose in everything.
If there is no Creator, then everything we are and everything we see, is all a very sophisticated accident.
Accidents don’t have purpose…
An accident is an event that happens by chance; unexpectedly, without cause or intention.
Purpose is defined as the intention or reason that something is created.
There is no such thing as a purposeful accident… and there is no such thing as an accidental purpose!
You can say that everything that exists is an accident and that it has no meaning or reason, but that would not explain why every human being seeks reason, explanation and purpose.
If we seek to learn and find the purpose of everything that exists, we need to acknowledge that everything that has a purpose was created for that purpose.
And everything intentionally created, has an intentional Creator!
Since we have a purpose, we seek our purpose and we are intentional, purposeful beings…
This means that we were created purposefully, for a reason.
This means, we have an intentional Creator!
That intentional Creator is the Lord, the one true God!
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
Ephesians 2:10 NKJV
So, what does our Creator tell us about our purpose?
Is our purpose in life to travel the world and help those less fortunate?
Perhaps, our purpose is to start a billion dollar company!
Could our purpose possibly be, to become the best hairstylist in our city?
Maybe, our purpose is to simply be the best parent we can be to those children!
Can I be honest with you?
Those are all good and beautiful things to do in your life, but purpose is far greater than a job or a title.
Purpose is so solid that whether you are currently just trying to pay the bills or if you are in the career of your dreams, you can be working in your purpose!
This is because a purpose goes far deeper than what we feel we have a talent for or what we would enjoy in life!
If you are trying to make ends meet at the moment and you can’t imagine how you will get to a steady financial situation again, you can be living in your purpose!
If you are in a season where tragedy struck your life and purpose is the last thing on your mind!
You can be struggling to get out of bed everyday, and still be walking in purpose.
You can fight an addiction in purpose, did you know that?
You can be homeless and still walk in purpose.
You can have money and still walk in purpose!
With God, purpose is not in a specific work environment or an achievement.
With God you can work in your purpose in everything you do!
Our purpose in life is in God’s purpose for us!
“You can make many plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail.”
Proverbs 19:21 NLT
What is God’s purpose for us?
“He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?”
Micah 6:8 NKJV
God’s purpose is not always easy but He makes it simple.
In all you do, be just.
Love giving mercy.
Walk humbly with God.
We were created for good works in Christ Jesus…
These are the things that help you do those good works.
It all has to do with your heart!
You can do seemingly good deeds for selfish reasons and be out of purpose!
So ask yourself, whether you are the head of an organization or if you are simply trying to be a stay at home parent…
Am I being fair?
Doing to others what I would want them to do to me?
Am I loving mercy?
Preferring forgiveness and kindness over teaching others a lesson and proving my point?
Am I walking humbly with God?
Not seeing myself as better than others or deserving of God’s grace but humbly acknowledging that because God values me regardless of my faults, I can value others with that same humility!
“Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.””
Matthew 22:37-40 NKJV
God created us for two things!
Love God.
Love people.
Again, very simple, but not very easy.
Though they seem too simple to hang our entire life’s purpose on it, it really isn’t that easy to achieve!
You think purpose is a monumental achievement or a dream come true!
Though, purpose can be in the monumental dream come true, God’s purpose is in the everyday loving God and loving people; which we can do no matter what season of life we are in!
You may think that this just sounds encouraging for the unsuccessful, but consider this…
Out of everyone who builds a large organization or church or who does really impressive things, that others only dream of…
Which ones actually do those two simple things, as well?
- Love the One who created them.
- Love those God put around them.
If they were so basic and unimpressive, how come we all fail to accomplish those things?
Since we see people accomplish these things the least,
I would say that there would be nothing more impressive than someone dedicating their life to this purpose.
This is what we were created for!
This is our purpose in life!
And I know it seems so small…
However, even if only one person in the whole world committed to God’s simple purpose for our lives, it would change the world!
If you don’t believe me…
Please consider the life of
Jesus Christ…
Who didn’t come as a king or a religious leader.
He came as a humble carpenter’s son, born in a stable, into a normal family.
He wasn’t important in the eyes of the culture.
He was just a regular, working class, Jewish man, in a sea of normal, everyday people.
He made God’s purpose His purpose…
And He changed the world!
“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”
Philippians 2:3-8 NKJV
